Hetzner provides cloud servers, dedicated root servers, networking and storage for websites, APIs, stores and data platforms. It is a strong option for organizations seeking flexible infrastructure, European locations and direct control over operations, cost and data residency.
A reliable platform requires more than selecting a server. Cloud versus bare metal, location, storage, networking, backups and operational ownership must fit together.
What does Hetzner offer?
The portfolio spans virtual cloud servers, dedicated hardware, load balancers, private networks, firewalls, volumes, object storage and Storage Boxes. The official documentation covers Cloud, Dedicated/Robot, Managed, Network and Storage products.
Cloud and dedicated root servers are unmanaged. Hetzner operates hardware and platform; customers remain responsible for operating systems, services, access, patches, encryption and application backups.
Cloud servers: flexible and automatable
Cloud servers can be provisioned through Console, CLI or API for web apps, container hosts, staging, workers and scalable backends. Shared vCPU plans share compute resources, while dedicated vCPU plans suit sustained compute-heavy workloads. Sizing should be based on measurements.
Infrastructure as Code makes servers, firewalls, networks and load balancers reproducible. Images, cloud-init, health checks and rollback processes reduce manual drift.
Dedicated servers: exclusive hardware
Dedicated servers provide exclusive CPU, memory and local drives. They can fit large databases, virtualization, build systems, storage and sustained loads. Provisioning, hardware replacement, RAID and recovery are less elastic than cloud resources.
Hybrid designs combine public services on cloud instances with data- or compute-heavy components on bare metal. Network paths, recovery and single points of failure require deliberate design.
Networking and security
Private Networks keep internal traffic off the public internet. Cloud Firewalls restrict connections, while Load Balancers distribute requests to healthy instances. Publish only required ports, isolate databases and use SSH keys.
Provider firewalls do not replace host controls or application security. TLS, security headers, rate limits, roles and logging remain platform responsibilities.
Choosing storage
Local disks offer low latency but remain tied to one machine. Volumes add block storage. Object Storage suits files, media and artifacts. Storage Boxes target backups and archives. The official storage overview compares the options.
Server backups and snapshots do not include attached Volumes, according to the documentation. Volumes and databases need separate backups, encrypted storage and tested restores.
Locations and data protection
The location overview lists Falkenstein, Nuremberg, Helsinki, US regions and Singapore. Hetzner operates its own data center parks in Germany and Finland and uses colocation outside Europe.
Stored cloud data remains in the EU for European locations according to Hetzner's privacy information. An EU location alone does not create GDPR compliance; agreements, encryption, access and retention still matter.
Secure operations
- restrict SSH and administration and use MFA;
- patch hosts, containers and applications;
- keep secrets out of repositories and images;
- monitor availability, resources, certificates and backups;
- keep databases private and encrypt connections;
- test recovery, failover and incident procedures.
Powered-off cloud servers remain billable while they exist. Cost control therefore requires inventory, budgets, tags and cleanup automation.
Typical architectures
- Web platform: load balancer, multiple cloud servers, private database and object storage.
- Store or CMS: separate app and database tiers, cache, media storage and external backups.
- Container platform: Docker or Dokploy on cloud or dedicated servers.
- Data-heavy systems: dedicated database servers with elastic cloud services.
When is Hetzner a good fit?
Hetzner suits teams capable of assembling infrastructure components into an operated platform. Organizations without capacity for patches, monitoring, backups and on-call response should plan managed services or an operations partner. The lowest server price is not automatically the lowest total cost.
